How To Avoid Summer Boredom

By Peter Lannon on May 6, 2013

We’ve all been there

Summer break, so bittersweet.  It’s nice to be home and see all of your friends, but soon you realize how much you miss school.  It finally dawns on you that you won’t spend your weekends partying and creating mischief,  instead you will most likely be mowing your mother’s lawn. Summer is fun don’t get me wrong, but the days tend to drag on when there is nothing to do. If you’re anything like me, you will already be bored after one day of being home.  So as a product of my infinite boredom, I’ve come up with my top four things for the college student to do in the summer to stay occupied,  avoid becoming criminally insane, and not be the one writing an article about boredom at 1:00AM.

1. Exercise

- This is probably the most important thing you can do in the summer.  You no longer have free access to your campus rec center, and everybody needs to exercise.  Try to find something you enjoy doing, because if you dread it, you will not be motivated to do it.  Don’t make it a chore.  Find an exercise that will get you outside so you don’t come back to school looking like Michael Jackson reincarnated. My number one suggestion is running.  Not a runner?  I don’t care.   Just go outside.

2. Try new things, go to different places

- You’ve spent the last 8 months on campus, and probably didn’t venture very far.  Now is your chance. If you can try something new at school, why can’t you at home? College is the only time in your life where you can basically do whatever you want and not have to be responsible, so take advantage of it, do something you haven’t done before, go to a big city, take a road trip. In the words of Scottie Smalls’ mother, “Get dirty, climb fences, get into trouble”.  DO SOMETHING.

3. Enjoy the time with your friends from home

- As long as you haven’t turned into a douche at school, odds are you’re friends have missed you and you’ve missed them, so have a get-together. These are the people you’ve grown up with and you only get to see them a few months out of the year. Share your experiences from college. Bring a little bit of your school back to them.

4. Don’t waste your summer complaining about not being at school

- I know we all want to be at school, but don’t be that pain-in-the-ass that moans about it. We are all going to miss the freedoms, the friends met in college, and the drinking of certain beverages.  You won’t be the only one.  Shut up.  Seriously, nobody cares.  Have fun with your friends.  Enjoy being home and spend time with the family. Fall semester will come soon enough.

Follow these tips to slightly enjoy the summer.  Before you know it you’ll be back at school in a theater class you have no business in, and writing a 1000 word critique on a play while you ask yourself where you went wrong in life.  Wishing you were home.
