Is it necessary to get professional head shots done for internships and jobs?

I don't think it's necessary, but it won't hurt!
This is not certainly necessary, but you do want to have a presentable photo to show to hiring managers. You don't need a glam shot but something that makes you look professional is just fine. I took my LinkedIn photo on my iPhone and it holds up pretty good for me.
It's not necessary unless you're looking to spiff up your social media accounts (especially LinkedIn, as folks said below). In regards to internships and jobs, I think generally the consensus right now in the world of job applications is that your resume and other documents need not have a photo of yourself on it because it often triggers implicit bias among employers (which is unfortunate, but definitely influential, as has been proven by studies about which types of names get called for job interviews versus other names). If you include a photo of yourself on CVs and resumes, you risk the employer making judgments about you unconsciously before they even meet you. I'd say just take a few nice photos for your internet profiles, and you should be all set!
Not necessary, but you should at least have a photo where you are dressed professionally and have a nice backdrop. Smart phone cameras are so great now-a-days that you could easily ask one of your friends to help you out, look like a pro in your pic, and forgo the fee of getting a "real" headshot.
It's not necessary, but it does help you look more professional. If you have a LinkedIn profile (which is highly recommended) your profile will look more mature and professional with a headshot versus a selfie you posted on Instagram or Facebook. It's important to provide the best first impression when applying to jobs, which can help with a professional headshot. Some colleges offer free headshots in their career center, so you don't have to pay for them!
In short, no.

You can absolutely get them done anyway, as you should have a professional picture on your LinkedIn page, but it's also not necessary to get them done. You can certainly take a head shot on your own (have a family member or friend take the picture) in which you're dressed professionally.

It's an optional expense, and there are plenty of differing opinions surrounding them.
